Celebrating International Women’s Day

Today is International Women’s Day, a day to celebrate the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women and to raise awareness of the challenges women face today. The theme for this year’s celebration is ‘Embrace Equity’, a call to action to promote fairness and justice in all aspects of our lives.

As an organisation, archTIS is committed to creating a more inclusive and equitable workplace for all our staff.  We want to take the opportunity to recognize the contributions and achievements of all women, especially those in our organization and the greater tech industry.

For the third year in a row, we are celebrating the talented women of archTIS by sharing their insights and wisdom with others as ‘Women in Tech’. This year our HR and Engineering team members share their roles and offer advice to young women considering a career in tech.

Meet Some of archTIS’ Women in Tech

Libby McKellar, Database Administrator

What is your role at archTIS?

I’m the database administrator in our ICT group.

What advice would you give young women considering a career in tech?

My advice is to study and get a solid base set of skills and then to be flexible and keep learning.  You may be really interested in one particular area, but try other things and be willing to turn your hand to anything.  Tech is an ever-advancing area; jobs exist in ICT today that weren’t even thought of 5 years ago!  Keep your skills current and add skills every chance you get.  Tech is fun!

Danielle Harman, People & Corporate Services Manager, archTISDanielle Harman, People & Corporate Services Manager

What is your role at archTIS?

I manage the People and Corporate Services functions for our globally-dispersed team of professionals and tech experts.

What made you choose tech as a career path?

After working for almost a decade in the legal sector, I had lost the feeling of fulfillment I once got from my role, and I knew it was time for a change.

I was seeking a more fast-paced environment with interesting and challenging work, and I wanted to be solving problems and helping make a positive impact in people’s everyday lives. The tech industry ticked all these boxes and more.

Despite being a historically male-dominated field, the tech industry offers many exciting opportunities for women.

A lack of diversity in the tech industry is not only a social issue but also a business problem. Without diverse perspectives, products and services may not fully meet the needs of all consumers. Technology is transforming virtually every aspect of our lives, and women have a unique perspective and set of skills that can contribute to its development.

Since I made the change and it’s been an overwhelmingly positive experience. I arrive each day with a sense of purpose and leave each day with a sense of pride.
